NINE STARS · EIGHT MANSIONS
The stars and trigrams
associated with your birth year
Nine Star Ki cycles nine stars through years and months. Eight Mansions feng shui assigns a trigram using birth year and gender. We show names calculated by the rules without interpreting luck or directions.

What rules were used?
Annual birth star (yearly Nine Stars)
The nine stars move backward one position each year. Volume 8 of the Qing imperial Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu places One White at the center in 1684 (Kangxi year 23), a Jiazi year. Using this anchor gives Four Green in 1960 and One White in 2026.
Monthly birth star (monthly Nine Stars)
The same text assigns stars to solar-term months. The first spring month starts with Eight White in Zi/Wu/Mao/You years, Five Yellow in Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei years, and Two Black in Yin/Shen/Si/Hai years, moving backward monthly. KASI data provides solar-term dates.
Birth trigram (Eight Mansions feng shui)
Volume 35 of Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu gives separate formulas: male cycles begin with Kan 1, Xun 4 or Dui 7 and count backward; female cycles begin with center 5, Kun 2 or Gen 8 and count forward. Center 5 is reassigned to Kun 2 for men and Gen 8 for women. The cycle spans 180 years.
What was and was not verified
- Annual stars counted from the 1684 anchor matched all eight checked years in a published Japanese Nine Star table.
- The birth-trigram formula matched the 180-row table in Gu Jin Tu Shu Ji Cheng.
- The spring year boundary was confirmed only in practitioner materials, not institutional or classical sources. Both boundary results are therefore shown for birthdays between January 1 and Beginning of Spring.
- We have not confirmed whether the precise time on Beginning of Spring matters, so both values are shown for birthdays that day.
- The traditional birth-trigram system provides only male and female formulas. Rules for other cases have not been established.
- Marriage calculations use different anchors, which the Qing imperial text describes as a mistakenly spread method. This screen uses residential calculations only.
